I had an idea a couple of weeks ago that multiples of 3's and 9's and so on in a torus shape, the magnets not 'in-line' but on a graduated wave, left to right of the pushing static magnets as you look laterally. that may not be so true anymore, I can't manage the model in my head enough just yet to find benefit.
With the following arrangement of 9 inner magnets and 32 outer we get a positive clockwise push. There always having 6 in a pushable position and only 3 overcomeing negative push.
Try stepping through the above animation in reverse and see how unlikely it is that the system would rotate anticlockwise - That much disinclination to reverse must leave a positive inclination to rotate clockwise!
